Test, test and test again

As technology has moved on, so have the number of operating systems, resolutions, devices and browsers.

As you can't (morally) tell your site visitors which browser, device etc to use (though believe it or not some websites actually do) it is imperative that your site is tested for compatibility.

Have a look at your site in Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Safari and Internet Explorer. Access it from your smartphone and any tablets you have. It won't look identical on all of these as some display HTML and CSS differently, but if sections overlap, fall off the page or simply don't work then you're missing out on customers using that browser/device. If you're using a free site builder like Wix, 1&1, Mr Site or Weeble you may need a full redesign (more on free site builders in the coming weeks), but if you can access your website files via FTP any web design professional can fix your issues.

Remember, if your visitors can't access what they want within a couple of seconds they'll go elsewhere.
