Don't bother with auto DMs


A few weeks ago, I covered the use of auto retweets and highlighted a couple of major drawbacks of using techniques like this to manage your social media. Today it's another automated feature being over used: Auto DMs


While it's tempting to use a feature that welcomes each individual follower, the best way to do this is (if you want to) is to mention them in a tweet, not send a direct message.

According to the Twitter guidelines it can be flagged as spam.


Receiving auto DMs from an account I've followed gets on my nerves, and makes me think that twice about a company that doesn't engage in their social media. It's called SOCIAL media for a reason. I did a quick tally of how many auto DMs I received in January:
